Diet, Weight Loss, and the Bible

5:16 PM

Over the years I've encountered quite a bit of believers in the Bible that seem to feel as though when it comes to weight loss and the Bible, they are left to grope in the darkness for answers. But has the Bible really left you without an answer to one the most important issues of your life?

It has been said time and time again that the Bible has a solution for every problem a person may have. And so, contrary to popular opinion, when it comes to weight loss the Bible is not silent by any means.

Sadly, Bible believers are no strangers to excess body fat. In fact, the greater majority of the American population is overweight -- and this doesn't even include the rising percentage of little kids who are tipping the scales along with their parents. It seems the fatter we get, the more we obsess about it -- and with good reason: Because most diets offer quick and temporary fixes that typically back lash you back to your old weight plus a extra pounds to boot.

But the Bible offers the real fix for weight loss, a permanent fix. Let's look at one of the more basic, but incredible weight loss "tip" straight from the Bible,

It should come as no shock to you that one of the main causes of packing on the pounds is the type of food we eat. We love to eat and we love to eat good tasting food - whether the food is good for our bodies is a toss up. But there is no reason why we cannot enjoy good food in a good way that results in a good-looking body. God made us and knows we like to eat, and He certainly doesn't specialize in ruining our "fun" - but He laid out some fundamental "Food Rules" to live by, rules that will help us achieve good-looking bodies while eating good tasting food. Rules that will mean getting rid of the excess body fat, jiggling stomach flap, and thunder thighs.

It will be the intelligent person that will not casually bat an eye at the Old Testament. The first "installment" of the Bible lays a foundation without which the New Testament would be basically gobbledy-gook to us. In the Book of Genesis God designated animals as "clean" animals and as "unclean" animals. And contrary to popular opinion, these distinctions were made before the birth of the Jewish nation because when God designated animals as clean or unclean animals, He did so for the entire human race.

This certainty comes from the fact that in the Book of Genesis 7:1-2, God told Noah that He was going to purge the entire earth with a flood, "... the Lord said unto Noah, come thou and all thy house into the ark; for thee have I seen righteous before me in this generation. Of every clean beast thou shalt take to thee by sevens, the male and his female; and of beasts that are not clean by two, the male and the female." Not only were there no Jews in existence as a distinct people at this point in time, but the distinctions between clean and unclean animals would have already have to have been known even before Noah's time -- or else how would Noah even have known what God was talking about to begin with?!

By telling us which animals could be eaten as food and which animals should never be eaten, God gave us a fundamental Bible "weight loss tip" which can make a world of difference in our personal battles against the bulge.
